Who is Jesus?

There’s something that many historians will agree on, even the secular one. That Jesus was actually a real person who walked this planet around 2000 years ago. Many have dubbed Him as a good moral teacher, others say He’s just a messenger of God, just one of those old prophets. But the real question is this; Who really is this man? This is a question that has sparked endless conversation, reflection, and debate throughout history. Clearly,  Jesus refers to himself as way more than just a historical figure; He is the Savior of mankind, God Himself in the flesh. This article would never do Him justice in explaining all His fullness. But for now, i'll give you a true glimpse of who Jesus Christ of Nazareth is.

Colossians 1:9-18

'For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.'

Today my prayer is that we all get to experience Him at a personal level. May the Holy Spirit who knows the mind of God, reveal more and more Christ to all. (John 15:26, 1 Corinthians 2:9-10)

Jesus is God in the Flesh: The Holy Trinity declares that God exists as three distinct Persons—God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit—but is one in essence and nature. This means that Jesus is fully God, distinct from but in perfect unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is not merely a good teacher or prophet; He is God Himself, coming to us in human form. The Gospel of John opens with this profound truth:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." – (John 1:1, 14 )

Jesus, called the “Word,” existed with God from the very beginning and was God. Jesus was even before the world was, in His prayer in John 17,  He mentions this in verse 5,

And now, O Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was.'

In Philippians 2:6-7, we see this divine nature described: ,

being in very nature God,  made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” God Himself came down to our level, living among us to bridge the gap between humanity and Himself. Jesus embodies this bridge, revealing God’s love in a profoundly personal way, and opening a way for us to experience a relationship with God in all His fullness—Father, Son, and Spirit.

In John 10:30, Jesus declares,

“I and the Father are one.”

At first, this might not appear as an outright claim to be God. However, the Jewish leaders clearly undertsood what He meant and they immediately picked up stones to kill Him, accusing Him of blasphemy and saying, “Because you, a mere man, claim to be God” (John 10:33).

The Jews clearly understood Jesus’ words as Him declaring  equality with God. In the verses that follow, Jesus does not correct or soften His statement—He doesn’t deny their interpretation or say, “I did not claim to be God.” By saying, “I and the Father are one,” Jesus was affirming His divine identity and unity with God.

Further, in John 8:58, Jesus makes another declaration of His eternal nature, when he said,

Very truly I tell you before Abraham was born, I am!

Here, Jesus used the divine name “I AM,” first revealed by God in Exodus 3:14. This name is the name of God and directly linked Jesus to God Himself, and as before, the Jews responded by attempting to stone Him, fully aware that He was identifying Himself with God.

Jesus is the Son of God: When the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to give her the news that she would be the mother of Jesus, he twice declared that she would be the mother of Jesus the son of God

Luke 1:32: “He will be called great and will be called the Son of the Most High.”

Luke 1:35: “...therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God.

At Jesus’ baptism, God openly declared that Jesus was His son:

"This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." – Matthew 3:17

Jesus consistently calls God “Father” in a way that showed His place as the Son of God, who has God’s divine nature. In John 10:30, Jesus makes this bold statement:

"I and the Father are one."

Jesus was declared a unity with God Himself. He wasn’t just a man; He was God’s own Son, who came to redeem the world as John 3:16 says.

Even further when Jesus would cast out demons, they would address Him as the Son of God

Luke 4:41: “And demons also came out of many, crying, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.”

Mark 3:11: “And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, ‘You are the Son of God.’”

Jesus Lived a Sinless Life: Jesus lived a life without fault or sin. The Bible tells us that although He was fully human, He remained completely without sin. Hebrews 4:15 explains,

"For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin."

God has the sinless nature that Jesus had, 1 John 1:5 says '.. that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. '  This purity allowed Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins, standing in our place though He had done no wrong.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus is the Only Way to God – The Way, the Truth, and the Life: . In John 14:6, He said,

"I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Jesus came to draw the whole world near to God by providing a way to God that is accessible to everyone who believes. When Jesus says He is the “way,” He is the bridge between our imperfect world and God’s perfect holiness, Through Christ we all can confidently approach the throne of God, and we all can seek and find God. Christ is our way!. As “the truth,” He reveals who God truly is, the ultimate, inarguable, definitive, eternal, and supreme truth. Jesus is truth embodied. Truth incarnate. And the truth of His claim means that we are to believe Him, trust Him, and submit every one of our “truths” to His truth. As “the life,” Jesus declares all life came from Him, John 1:4 says  ..In Him  was life, and the life was the light of men  Jesus defeated death, He gave us life and a life in abundance, He is the author and the source of our eternal life, John 3:16 famously declares,

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life”

Jesus Was Crucified, Died, and Resurrected—and He Lives Forever: Jesus gave up His life, dying on a cross for our sins. This act of sacrifice was God’s ultimate expression of love for us. As Romans 5:8 says,

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Jesus took on our punishment, the weight of our sin so that we could be forgiven and made right with God. But the story didn’t end at the cross. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, defeating death itself..As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 15:3-4:

"Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day."

Through Christ`s death we are saved forever from sin, when you are in Christ, the bible says, it is no longer you who live but Christ lives in you (Galatians 2:20) and he becomes your righteousness.(1 Corinthians 1:30-31) It was the coming and the dying of the Son that gave us the gift of adoption. So if you confess Jesus, you have the Father also. And if you have the Son and the Father, then you have everlasting life.

Certainly Jesus Will Come Back Soon: Jesus described His return, saying in Matthew 24:27:

For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man... At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.”

He also says this during His trial, when the high priest asked Him,

“Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?” Jesus replied: “‘I am,’ said Jesus. ‘And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.’” – Mark 14:61-62.

When Jesus comes back, He will judge the world, as described in Revelation 20:12:

“And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”

However, for those who have already given their life to Christ, acknowledged their sins, and received His mercy through faith, there is no fear in His judgment. Instead, they will the fullness of His grace and eternal life.

So, who is Jesus? He is God come to earth, the Son of God, the Savior, the only way to the Father, the risen Lord, and the returning King. Through Jesus, we experience the profound love of God, a love that pursues us, forgives us, and transforms us.

Today Jesus invites you to know Him. He stands with open arms, calling each of us to experience His love.

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

In Him, we find forgiveness,  hope and life that reaches beyond this world.

How do you come to know and to have fellowship with Jesus? You listen to his Word,  (Luke 9:35) and you pray for the revelation of Him and believe in Him.

"Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?" (1 John 5:5.)
