Abide, and You Will Bear Fruit
Today's scripture“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:4-5

There is enormous relief hidden in this passage, and most of us miss it because we are too busy trying to be good branches. Jesus does not command the branch to produce fruit by effort. He commands it to abide. The fruit takes care of itself.
A branch does not grunt and strain to make grapes. It stays attached to the vine, and the life of the vine flows through it, and fruit appears as a matter of course. That is the whole picture. The pressure you feel to perform your way into holiness is pressure Jesus never put on you.
Apart from Him, nothing
Jesus is blunt about the alternative. Apart from me you can do nothing. Not a little. Not some. Nothing — nothing of eternal weight, nothing that lasts, no true spiritual fruit at all.
This is worth sitting with, because so much of the Christian life gets reduced to willpower. We treat abiding as optional and effort as essential, when Jesus says it is the other way around. Cut the branch off and give it every motivational speech you can think of; it will still wither. It needs the vine, not a lecture.
What abiding actually looks like
To abide is simply to stay. To remain in Him through the ordinary means He has given — His Word, prayer, obedience, the fellowship of His people. It is not dramatic. It is daily. It is choosing, again and again, to keep the connection open rather than to run on your own strength.
Blessed is the man… his delight is in the law of the LORD… He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season.
— Psalm 1:1-3
The tree in Psalm 1 bears fruit in season because it is planted by the water, not because it is trying harder than the other trees. Stay near the stream. Keep your roots in Him.
So stop measuring your spiritual life by how much fruit you can manufacture. Measure it by whether you are staying close to Jesus. Abide, and the fruit He promised will come — much fruit, in its season, by His life in you.
