Fix your eyes UPON JESUS
We live in a world full of so many distractions, so many things calling for our attention, so many items on our list of priorities. Even though many of these things are not sinful per se, they compete for our attention. However, you and I who know Jesus understand that there is absolutely no one, and no thing, more worthy of our lives than Jesus. Jesus is our King, He is our God. And His Word says:
Exodus 20:2-3
"I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me."
Yes, this is an Old Testament command, but it still applies to you and me because we are in a covenant with Him. We are His bride, and He is our Bridegroom. Let me tell you, He is jealous for us. He wants us only for Himself. He will not tolerate us having other lovers. That’s why He reveals in James:
James 4:4
"Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God."
And also in Exodus, He says:
Exodus 34:14
"For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."
God wants us for Himself. He wants us to give Him our whole lives, and the only way we can ever pull that off in this world full of countless distractions is by fixing our eyes on Jesus, our Elder Brother and High Priest. Jesus is our role model. We are supposed to follow closely in His footsteps. He has already won His race, and since He is our role model, if we are going to win this race, we must emulate Him. He will give us the strength. Hebrews says:
Hebrews 12:1-2
"Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God."
There is a quote that says, "You become what you behold," and also, "What you feed will grow." The more you fix your eyes on Jesus, the more strangely dim the things of the world will grow. So, you want to spend most of your time doing things that focus your attention on Him. Like praying, consistently consuming godly material, reading His Word, meditating on it, and worshiping Him with songs. Just make Him the main focus of your life
