Be Still and Know

Psalm 46:10 — Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!
This verse is quoted often on calm backgrounds, but the psalm it comes from is anything but calm. The earth is giving way, mountains are falling into the sea, nations are in an uproar. It is into that chaos that God says: be still.

So this is not a call to a peaceful life. It is a call to a peaceful heart in the middle of an unpeaceful one. And the two are very different things.

Stillness is surrender

To be still is to stop striving. It is to lay down the frantic effort to control what was never yours to control. The Hebrew carries the sense of letting go, releasing your grip, ceasing from the struggle.

That is hard, because striving feels responsible. Stillness feels like doing nothing. But God is not asking for passivity. He is asking for trust — for you to unclench your hands long enough to remember who is actually holding everything together.

Know that He is God

The stillness has a purpose: so that you can know. Not know more facts, but know Him — settle back into the truth that He is God and you are not. Your striving often comes from quietly forgetting that.

The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress.

— Psalm 46:11

That is how the psalm ends. Not with the chaos resolved, but with the presence of God as a fortress in the middle of it. He does not promise the mountains will stop falling. He promises to be your refuge while they do.

So today, before you rush to fix everything, be still. Loosen your grip. And know — really know — that He is God, He is with you, and He will be exalted in the end.
